VTG-built cement wagons for Hope Construction Materials now in service

A fleet of state-of-the-art, VTG Rail UK–commissioned cement wagons, built in partnership with Hope Construction Materials, is now in service following their official launch at Hope Works, Derbyshire.

The 48 lightweight, aluminium wagons will immediately contribute to the commitment to sustainability made by both VTG and Hope

Now in use, the wagons will improve Hope’s ability to consistently transport over a million tonnes of cement from their leading plant to depots, for onward road deliveries to cement customers across the UK.

The new wagons can carry 80 tonnes of product in comparison with the current wagon payload of 36 tonnes. This means fewer trains are required to achieve the same annual volume, resulting in reduced movements up and down the branch line between Hope Works and the mainline.

Fuel consumption and carbon emissions are reduced thanks to the use of lightweight materials and they will be quieter than older alternatives, utilising track-friendly bogies which attract lower track access charges and benefit from longer service intervals.

Ian Shaw, Sales and Marketing Director from VTG Rail UK, said: “I am delighted that Hope Construction Materials chose VTG Rail UK as its supplier of new rail wagons.

“Both companies share similar cultures where emphasis is placed on safety, quality and reliability while promoting entrepreneurial behaviours.

“VTG is at the forefront of innovation in rail freight rolling stock and is able to provide the latest, most efficient wagons supported by the best customer service and technical support. “
