VTG Rail UK unveils striking iWagon at Next Generation Line-Up exhibition

VTG Rail UK will showcase its multi-award winning iWagon in eye-catching style at this year’s Next Generation Line-Up Exhibition, part of the nationwide Railway 200 celebrations, taking place at Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham, from 24 September to 1 October 2025.

A specially branded IIA-C covered hopper wagon has been transformed with distinctive iWagon livery, highlighting the cutting-edge rail freight technology developed by VTG Rail UK in partnership with Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems.

The wrapped wagon, fitted with VTG Telematics and Knorr-Bremses’s FreightControl Sentinel system (the technological backbone of VTG’s iWagon), demonstrates the commitment of both companies in promoting innovation and driving forward safer, smarter, and more sustainable freight operations.

The VTG iWagon is the UK’s first digital freight wagon, using sensors and wireless technology to monitor key components including brakes and wheels in real time. This self-powered system controls wheel speed, prevents slides and enables remote monitoring of its condition, transmitting real-time data to improve maintenance and prevent potential freight train derailments.

As one of three vehicles on display at the Next Generation Line-Up, the iWagon will sit alongside other transformative technologies that are set to shape the future of Britain’s railways. The free exhibition will offer visitors a rare chance to see next-generation rail innovations in one place.

Marc Hurn, Managing Director of VTG Rail UK, said: “The iWagon represents a step change in how rail freight wagons can perform. By integrating state-of-the-art sensors, data analytics, and automation, we can improve safety, reliability, and efficiency across the industry.

“Exhibiting this specially branded iWagon at Locomotion gives us the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of this technology, not only within the rail freight sector but also across the wider industry. We want customers and stakeholders to see first-hand how innovation is shaping the future of freight.”

The iWagon technology has already been retrofitted to numerous customer fleets operating on the UK mainline and incorporates pioneering technologies such as brake condition monitoring (BCM), wheel flat prevention (WFP), axle lock detection, and real-time tracking. These systems are designed to reduce maintenance needs, extend asset life, and maximise performance – delivering benefits for operators and the wider supply chain.

Nigel Day, Business Improvement Director at VTG Rail UK, said: “It’s a proud moment to see the iWagon showcased at the Next Generation Line-Up Exhibition, especially during such a historic year for the railway industry. This iWagon project has been the result of years of hard work and collaboration, and the demonstration wagon is a fantastic example of what innovation can deliver for rail freight

“By bringing together digital technology, and sustainable design, we are showing the industry - and the wider public - just how far freight wagons have come, and the exciting direction we are heading in.”

The striking iWagon wrap was delivered through a collaborative effort involving several industry partners. RGVA Vehicle Graphics applied the branding, following extensive preparation and cleaning carried out by Mandy Rail. The work took place at MCL Rail’s Gascoigne Wood facility near Knottingley, where MCL also coordinated wagon movements to ensure a smooth and efficient wrapping process. The wagon, which was formerly on lease to GBRf, will be transported by road by Reid Freight Services – specialists in abnormal load operations - from Gascoigne Wood to Locomotion ahead of the exhibition, before returning to safe storage.

Following its debut at Next Generation Line-Up, the demonstration wagon will appear at events across the UK and Europe, providing customers and stakeholders with opportunities to experience the technology up close.
